1. LEGOLAND Billund Theme Park

Original LEGO wonderland. I couldn’t believe I was standing at the very first LEGOLAND park in the world! Created after 20,000+ visitors flocked to the LEGO factory annually, this iconic theme park welcomed 625,000 guests in its first year alone. Now it’s part of a global phenomenon attracting 15 million visitors yearly across all LEGOLAND parks.

Thrilling rides. My heart raced on the jungle rollercoaster with its breathtaking twists and turns. Don’t miss the Flying Eagle, Dragen, and X-treme Racers that’ll make you both laugh and scream. The LEGO NINJAGO Ride lets you challenge ninjas, while Ghost – The Haunted House rattled my bones with fear!

Mini World magic. Exploring Miniland was mind-blowing! I wandered through incredible replicas of famous landmarks built entirely from LEGO bricks – the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, and Tower of Pisa. The attention to detail is extraordinary, with over 20 million LEGO used throughout this section alone.

Family fun zones. The park features distinct themed areas including LEGO Ninjago World, The LEGO Movie World, Duplo Land, and the Imagination Zone. Each offers unique experiences tailored to different ages. My tip: The new 900-square-meter pirate playground opening April 5, 2025, will be wheelchair accessible with a 21.5-meter pirate ship as its centerpiece!

2. LEGO House Experience

Home of the Brick. I was awestruck by this architectural marvel in downtown Billund! Designed by Danish starchitect Bjarke Ingels, LEGO House resembles 21 gigantic stacked LEGO bricks. Since opening in 2017 after seven years of development, it’s become the perfect year-round attraction – even when LEGOLAND is closed for winter.

Tree of Creativity. Standing beneath the 15-meter-high Tree of Creativity was breathtaking. Built using 6.3 million LEGO, this centerpiece symbolizes endless imagination and connects all the experience zones. My tip: Take photos from different floors to capture this masterpiece from various angles.

Color-coded experiences. Each zone emphasizes LEGO’s philosophy of learning through play with impressive technology that’s genuinely fun. The Masterpiece Gallery showcases incredible fan creations, while the History Collection explores LEGO’s fascinating journey and its founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen’s vision.

Must-visit zones in LEGO House:

  • Red Zone: Free building with unlimited bricks
  • Blue Zone: Test engineering skills with robotics

3. LEGO Factory Tour & LEGO Store

Behind-the-scenes magic. I felt like Charlie entering the chocolate factory when I stepped into the LEGO Factory Tour! Located near the original production facility where Ole Kirk Kristiansen started it all in 1932, this experience gives you a fascinating glimpse into how those colorful bricks are made. The smell of fresh plastic and the rhythmic sounds of the machines created a sensory experience I wasn’t expecting.

Production secrets. Watching the molding machines in action was mesmerizing – each LEGO brick is produced with a precision of 0.004mm! I learned that a single mold can cost up to 80,000 EUR and produce over a million elements before being retired. My guide explained that LEGO produces over 36 billion pieces annually in factories worldwide, but Billund remains the heart of it all.

Interactive elements. The tour isn’t just about watching – I got to try operating a mini molding machine myself! The hands-on quality testing station was particularly fun, where I learned how LEGO maintains its famous clutch power (the perfect grip between bricks). Children around me were absolutely captivated by seeing their favorite toys come to life.

Factory tour highlights:

  • The historical timeline showing LEGO’s evolution since 1932
  • The molding demonstration with real machines
  • The quality testing area where you can test brick precision
  • The exclusive behind-the-scenes look at upcoming sets
  • The interactive design lab where you can suggest new ideas

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Billund

1.Playline Walk & Capital of Children Area

Sculpture-filled strolls. I discovered the Billund Sculpture Park completely by accident while walking from Legoland to the city center. This free attraction features amazing sculptures, art installations, and beautiful natural surroundings. It’s the perfect way to stretch your legs between the major attractions and gives kids space to run around.

Capital of Children concept. Billund proudly calls itself the “Capital of Children,” and this walking route embodies that philosophy perfectly. The pathways are designed with families in mind, featuring interactive elements that spark imagination and creativity. My niece spent ages playing with the musical installations!

Natural beauty spots. The walk takes you through some lovely green spaces with plenty of benches for resting. I particularly enjoyed the small pond area where we spotted ducks and other wildlife. The route is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it accessible for strollers and younger children.

Must-see sculptures along the Playline Walk:

  • The giant colorful blocks near the LEGO House
  • The musical chimes that children can play with
  • The abstract metal sculptures in the wooded area
  • The water features that change with the seasons
  • The hidden LEGO-inspired installations

Practical information. This completely free attraction connects Legoland and Lalandia with the center of Billund. Allow about 30-45 minutes for the walk if you’re just passing through, or 1-2 hours if you want to enjoy all the sculptures and play areas. It’s open year-round and particularly beautiful in spring when flowers are blooming.

2. Aquadome Water Park at Lalandia Resort

Tropical paradise. Walking into Lalandia’s Aquadome felt like I’d been transported to a Caribbean island! The temperature stays at a balmy 28°C year-round, making it perfect for a rainy day activity or winter visit. Palm trees, white sand beaches, and azure pools create a convincing tropical atmosphere right in the heart of Denmark.

Water adventures. I braved the Wild River ride three times in a row – an exhilarating water slide that had me laughing and screaming in equal measure. The wave pool creates impressive surf every 30 minutes, while the more adventurous can tackle the Master Blaster water coaster or the Tornado funnel slide.

Relaxation zones. After all the excitement, I retreated to the adults-only spa area with its steam rooms, saunas, and jacuzzis. The outdoor heated pool was particularly magical – floating in warm water while looking up at the Danish sky was a unique experience I won’t forget.

Aquadome highlights for different ages:

3. Teddy Bear Art Museum

Charming collection. Housed in the former private residence of the LEGO family, this architectural gem from 1959 is now home to over 1,200 teddy bears! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this museum as an adult – it’s not just for children. The collection spans the history of teddy bears from antique rarities to modern collectibles.

Historical significance. I learned that the teddy bear was named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt following a hunting trip in 1902. The museum does an excellent job of connecting teddy bear history with broader cultural movements throughout the 20th century. The vintage Steiff bears from the early 1900s were particularly impressive.

Interactive exhibits. Children can participate in teddy bear workshops where they create their own bear accessories or learn about the manufacturing process. The “Famous Bears” section featuring literary characters like Paddington and Winnie the Pooh was a nostalgic highlight for me.

Top exhibits at the Teddy Bear Museum:

  • The original 1902 “Teddy’s Bear” design
  • The royal collection of bears owned by European monarchs
  • The movie star bears from famous films
  • The record-breaking smallest and largest teddy bears
  • The interactive “Bear Hospital” where children can repair teddies

Outdoor Activities in Billund

1. Dyrenes Verden Filskov Mini Zoo

Animal encounters. Just 10 minutes away from Billund Airport, I found this charming mini zoo that locals sometimes call “Billund Zoo.” Despite its small size, Dyrenes Verden Filskov offers close-up experiences with animals that you can’t get at larger parks. The highlight of my visit was entering Denmark’s largest bird cage where colorful parrots landed right on my shoulders!

Family-friendly atmosphere. This is definitely one of the top things to do around Billund with kids. My nephew spent ages in the goat enclosure, laughing as the friendly animals ate food right from his hand. It’s a fantastic alternative if you’re visiting Billund with children who need a break from the more crowded attractions.

Expanding collection. The zoo is constantly evolving, with new species of animal being added regularly. During my visit in March 2025, I noticed several new enclosures under construction. The owner told me they plan to add at least five more interactive areas before the summer school holidays begin.

Top experiences at Dyrenes Verden Filskov:

  • Interacting with friendly goats in their enclosure
  • Spotting unique small animals not found in larger zoos
  • Enjoying the peaceful countryside setting
  • Taking advantage of the picnic areas for tea and cake

2. Nature Trails & Hiking Areas around Billund

Woodland adventures. Just 15 minutes from Billund’s city center, I discovered Klelund Plantage, a stunning forest area that feels worlds away from the tourist attractions. The air smelled of pine and fresh earth as I followed well-marked trails through dense woodland. It’s one of Denmark’s most beautiful natural areas, yet surprisingly few visitors to Billund ever experience it.

Wildlife spotting. My early morning hike rewarded me with sightings of deer grazing in misty clearings. Klelund is home to the only herd of Danish wild buffalo, and although they are elusive, I was lucky enough to see them from a special viewing platform. Bring binoculars if you can – the birdwatching opportunities here are exceptional.

Accessible paths. What impressed me most was how the trails cater to different abilities. The main 3.2km loop is well-maintained with minimal elevation changes, making it perfect for families. More adventurous hikers can explore the network of smaller paths that branch deeper into the forest. My advice is to download the trail map before you visit as phone signal can be patchy.

Top hiking spots near Billund:

  • Klelund Plantage (15 minutes from Billund) – Wild bison and deer
  • Syvaarssoeen Lake (20 minutes) – Waterside trails and picnic areas
  • Omme River paths (10 minutes) – Gentle riverside walking
  • Grene Sande (12 minutes) – Unique inland sand dunes

Cultural & Historical Sites in Billund

1. Løvehuset (Home of LEGO Founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen)

Historical significance. Standing before the modest yellow house where the LEGO story began gave me goosebumps. Løvehuset (The Lion House) was the family home of Ole Kirk Kristiansen, who founded the LEGO company in 1932. The name comes from the stone lions guarding the entrance – symbols of quality that inspired LEGO’s famous motto: “Only the best is good enough.”

Preserved heritage. The LEGO Group has carefully maintained this important piece of Billund’s history. Inside, original furniture and personal items create an intimate glimpse into the Kristiansen family life. I was particularly moved by Ole’s original woodworking tools displayed in what was once his workshop – the simple beginnings of what would become one of Denmark’s most famous exports.

LEGO evolution. The exhibition chronicles how LEGO evolved from wooden toys to the plastic bricks we know today. Seeing the very first LEGO duck toy from 1935 was a highlight – it’s one of Billund’s most treasured artifacts. The displays show how the company survived devastating fires and economic hardships through innovation and determination.

Must-see items at Løvehuset:

  • Ole Kirk’s original woodworking tools
  • The first LEGO wooden duck from 1935
  • Family photographs and personal items
  • The first injection molding machine purchased in 1947

2. Churches & Cathedrals in Billund Area

Architectural treasures. I spent a peaceful afternoon exploring Grene Kirke, Billund’s oldest church dating back to the 12th century. Its whitewashed walls and red-tiled roof exemplify traditional Danish church architecture. Inside, the simple Lutheran design focuses attention on the beautifully carved altarpiece depicting scenes from Christ’s life.

Historical connections. What fascinated me most was learning how these churches connect to Billund’s development. The Kristiansen family (LEGO founders) were regular attendees at Grene Kirke, and their contributions helped preserve this important building. The church records contain fascinating insights into Billund’s transformation from tiny village to international destination.

Peaceful sanctuaries. After days of bustling theme parks, stepping into these quiet spaces offered welcome tranquility. Grindsted Kirke, just 10 minutes from Billund, features stunning stained glass windows that cast colorful patterns across the stone floor. I sat alone for twenty minutes, enjoying the silence and admiring the craftsmanship.

Notable churches near Billund:

  • Grene Kirke (Billund) – 12th century with connections to LEGO family
  • Grindsted Kirke (10 min drive) – Modern architecture with beautiful stained glass

Visitor information. All churches are free to enter, though opening hours vary. Most are open daily from 8:00 to 16:00, but services take precedence over tourism. My tip: check for concerts, especially during summer when many churches host evening performances of classical and traditional Danish music. These events offer a wonderful way to experience these historic buildings at their best.

3. Mark-Billund Kommunes Museer (Local Museums)

Local heritage. I stumbled upon this hidden gem while exploring Billund’s quieter streets. The Mark-Billund Kommunes Museer isn’t just one museum, but a collection of small exhibitions scattered throughout the town. Each offers a unique glimpse into Billund’s history before it became the “Capital of Children.”

Agricultural roots. The main exhibition, housed in a restored 19th-century farmhouse, showcases Billund’s agricultural past. I was fascinated by the old farming tools and the recreated living quarters. It’s a stark contrast to the high-tech LEGO attractions nearby, reminding visitors of Billund’s humble beginnings.

LEGO’s local impact. One section of the museum focuses on how LEGO transformed Billund from a rural backwater to an international destination. Personal accounts from long-time residents brought this story to life. I particularly enjoyed the display of early LEGO advertisements and packaging – it’s a nostalgic trip for any LEGO fan!

Must-see exhibits at Mark-Billund Kommunes Museer:

  • Restored 19th-century farmhouse with period furnishings
  • Collection of traditional Danish farming implements
  • Early LEGO advertisements and packaging from the 1950s-60s

Best Restaurants & Cafés in Billund

1. Top-rated Danish Restaurants

Local flavors. After days of theme park food, I was craving authentic Danish cuisine. Restaurant Billund Kro, housed in a charming thatched-roof building, didn’t disappoint. Their “New Nordic” menu showcases local ingredients in creative ways. I savored every bite of the smørrebrød platter, featuring open-faced sandwiches topped with herring, egg, and beef tartare.

Fine dining experience. For a special night out, I splurged on dinner at Bryghuset. This upscale restaurant sources ingredients from nearby farms and forests. The seasonal tasting menu was a culinary journey through Jutland’s flavors. The standout dish was a perfectly cooked piece of local venison served with foraged mushrooms and lingonberry sauce.

Cozy atmosphere. What struck me about both restaurants was the warm, welcoming ambiance. The Danish concept of “hygge” (coziness) was evident in the soft lighting, comfortable seating, and attentive service. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.

2. Family-friendly Cafés & Casual Dining Spots

LEGO-themed fun. The MINI CHEF restaurant at LEGO House was a hit with my nephew. Diners build their meal orders using LEGO bricks, then watch robots deliver the food to their table. The interactive experience kept him entertained, while I enjoyed a surprisingly good burger and salad.

Budget-friendly options. For quick, affordable meals near the attractions, I recommend Café Emmerys in the city center. Their fresh sandwiches and Danish pastries make for perfect picnic fare. The outdoor seating area is great for people-watching on sunny days.

Local favorite. Billund Pizza & Steakhouse became my go-to spot for casual dinners. Despite the name, they offer a wide range of dishes beyond pizza, including some tasty Danish specialties. The relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices make it popular with both tourists and locals.

Day Trips from Billund

1. Givskud Zoo

Wild encounters. Just a 40-minute drive from Billund lies one of Jutland’s can’t-miss attractions – Givskud Zoo. I spent a full day here and still didn’t see everything! Unlike traditional zoos, Givskud offers a genuine safari experience where you drive through animal enclosures in your own car. Watching giraffes and zebras cross the road right in front of me was absolutely thrilling.

The little ones played while the silverback kept a watchful eye on visitors. The zoo focuses on conservation and education, with informative signs explaining the challenges these magnificent animals face in the wild.

Allow at least 4-5 hours for your visit – this is definitely a full day trip from Billund.

2. Kongernes Jelling

Historic significance. My day trip to Kongernes Jelling, just 30 minutes from Billund, was one of the highlights of my entire trip to Denmark. This UNESCO World Heritage site features ancient rune stones that contain the first recorded mention of Denmark as a nation. Standing before these 10th-century monuments gave me goosebumps – I was literally touching the birthplace of Denmark!

Interactive museum. The free museum opposite the church is absolutely world-class. As I stepped inside, staff told my friend’s daughter she could touch anything unless it was marked in orange – in which case she HAD to touch it to bring the exhibit to life! This hands-on approach made Viking history accessible and exciting for visitors of all ages.

Royal connections. I was fascinated by the family tree showing the direct line of descent from Viking king Gorm the Old to present-day monarch Queen Margrethe II. The enlarged colored version of the rune stone helped me understand the meaning behind the ancient inscriptions. From the museum’s rooftop terrace, I gained a perfect perspective over the entire historic site.

Must-experience activities at Kongernes Jelling:

  • Touch the ancient rune stones (the first mention of “Denmark”)
  • Walk the virtual path to Valhalla in the interactive exhibits
  • Test which Viking weapons were most effective (simulator)
  • View the royal lineage from Viking kings to modern monarchy
  • Explore the surrounding burial mounds and church grounds

Practical details. Kongernes Jelling is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00. Incredibly, admission is completely free, making this one of the best value attractions in all of Denmark. The site is easily reached by car from Billund in about 30 minutes. If you’re using public transport, take bus 43 from Billund to Vejle, then connect to Jelling. Allow at least 2-3 hours to fully appreciate this remarkable site.

3. WOW PARK Billund

Treetop thrills. When my nephew started getting “LEGO fatigue” after three days in Billund, WOW PARK was the perfect antidote. This massive outdoor adventure park spans an area of 40 football fields filled with sky-high treehouses, and suspension bridges. Watching him race across cargo nets 14 meters above the ground made me both nervous and envious!

Natural playground. What impressed me most was how the park blends adventure with nature. Unlike the manufactured environments of LEGOLAND® Billund and Lalandia, WOW PARK utilizes the existing forest to create a more organic play experience. The little ones especially loved the friendly goats in the animal area and the creative craft workshop.

WOW PARK Billund

Water fun. On a hot day, the Water World section provided welcome relief from the heat. Children splashed and played while parents relaxed in nearby hammocks. The park has thoughtfully created spaces where adults can either join in the fun or take a breather while still supervising their kids.
